New bubble graph: Gapminder Agriculture

cow_shadowWhich country has the largest grain production? Who produces the most fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee beans or other crops? And who brings up the most sheeps, cows, or other livestock?

Now you can see agricultural production in a completely new Gapminder Graph. With data from FAO, we have collected over 700 indicators to show how agricultural production has changed over the last 45 years.

Here are a few examples:

I really enjoyed Hans Rosling’s talk in Gent Sept 09 and am now trying to figure out how he got the stats into bubbles.

Trendalyzer mutated into a google gadget “motion chart”. So far so good.

However, Google is rather cryptic about using this feature. Their gadget wants to be configured.

Now you announce bubbling up ag stats. Great, but where are the links to verify your claim?

All a bit difficult to navigate for the uninitiated. Any chance of publishing where they can be found more easily?

A good old fashioned software package for downloading would be much appreciated instead of all this up in the cloud stuff.

    Cheers

Dear Dirk, thank you for your questions.

Now you announce bubbling up ag stats. Great, but where are the links to verify your claim?” I’m not sure I understand, links to the agriculture graph? They are posted in this very blog-post. Just click on any of the examples and they will take you there.

“All a bit difficult to navigate for the uninitiated. Any chance of publishing where they can be found more easily?” – Yes you are absolutely right. We are working on a much better navigation for Gapminder World and sub-graphs. A system where you can choose to navigate on your own (as you do now) or browse through examples-graphs chosen by Gapminder. Stay tune at gapminder.org for some necessary updates shortly.

“A good old fashioned software package for downloading would be much appreciated instead of all this up in the cloud stuff.” – Again, we want to make you happy Kirk, we are working on that and a downloadable version will also be available shortly.

Any idea when economic data will be updated for beyond 2005? Last few years have been dramatic in terms of relative economic movement among nations and it will be interesting to get a visual on that.

    Hans:

Gapminder is excellent, I learn a lot with it, and the new Agriculture Graph also, but WHY DID YOU OMIT FORESTRY? It is one of the largest agricultural activities in the world.

    Hi Staffan

    Thanks for your explanations.

The ag examples are easy to find. The graphics are great. Best is the interactivity, though I am having difficulties tracking down the links to the rest of the Ag 700 indicators.

    Do they exist yet?

    Cheers

    Dirk

Hi Dirk, yes sorry if I misunderstood you. Yes, they do exist, open the graph (e.g. click on one example above) then simply click the indicator name on one of the axis to change it to something different. There you find all of the different indictors.

    Good luck!

    Hi Staffan

That hint about the axes did the trick. Amazing. Thank you very much. Cheers Dirk

There are some errors in your dataset. Check the maize yield (kg per hectare) indicators – Kuwait and Jordan are nowhere near 20,000 and 23,333 kg per hectare, respectively.

Where are the biggest dairy producers compared to dairy consumption?

    Great site, well done!

Where’s the info on corn in gapminder agriculture?

Also, is there a way to link the agriculture info with the standard gapminder world data? Would be interesting to match food production/consumption against health data or livestock/farming against deforestation/emission rates.

Another excellent application – thank you. One area of stats which I’d like to see covered which haven’t been by this would be land area by country. If I was greedy, I’d ask for the overall total, the estimated amount potentially useful for grazing and crop cultivation, the amount devoted to grazing, the amount devoted to crop cultivation, and the obvious expressions of these as proportions of each other. Obviously, some areas of land are politically controversial, but I’m sure the FAO or someone must have standard stats which you could use with the usual caveats. Thank you again,

    Paddy

I think it would be wonderful if you could incorporate data on meat consumption on a per-capita basis.
