Can I make my own graph?
Yes, by using the Google Gadget called Motion Chart.
It allows everyone to make a Gapminder-like bubble graph that you can publish on your web-page or blog.
This is an example:
To make your own Motion Chart (with your own data) you need to have a Google account (free). You can sign up here or login with your existing account.
When logged in to your Google account, go to Google Documents and make a new Spreadsheet. Click Insert->Gadget from the menu. Here you will find the Motion Chart gadget.
The Spreadsheet format should conform to this standard.
I have data, can Gapminder help me to share it?
In addition to Motion Chart from Google, Gapminder has a community for those urging to share and turn their time series of statistical indicators for countries of the world into Gapminder-like bubble graph on their website. The community use a system powered by Trendalyzer and Google spreadsheets.
We hope that international statistical agencies, universities and non-governmental organisations will find this to be a useful way to share well documented time series in animated graphics that can be understood by broad user groups.
The member requirements are:
- That you have time series for countries and territories with documented sources and methods of compilation.
- That the time series are indicators for countries and territories of the world.
- That the time series extend at least over 5 years
- That you agree to and have the right to freely share those time series.
If you or your organization wants to join the Gapminder Graph community, read more here.
Can I use Gapminder graphics/data in my presentation?
Yes, but since the download version of Gapminder World is not yet complete you need access to the Internet during you presentation. Use Gapminder graphics by:
- putting a link to the graph you would like to show in your presentation
- have several windows open during you presentation and switch between the presentation and Gapminder World.
- making a screen dump and save it on your computer. This only allows you to show a fixed image and the bubbles does not move.
-making a screen recording and embedding the video in your presentation (requires additional software).
Can I contribute to Gapminder’s work?
Gapminder appreciate collaborating with people all over the field (with organisations and universities as well as with companies), all over the world. Please contact us and tell us what you are doing/would like to do and we can see if there are any matching tasks.
Translations
Some of our exisiting software can easily be translated to other languages, but some have technical limitations and are no longer updated.
Is the Gapminder Foundation non-profit?
Yes. Read more about the Gapminder Foundation here.
Why is Gapminder doing this? Is there any political agenda behind Gapminder?
Gapminder’s work serves a purpose of filling a gap. There has been a market failure in distributing global data. A lot of people are interested in the data, but don’t get access to it (and if they manage to access the data, they need to be advanced skilled statisticians to analyze it). Gapminder wants to make data more accessible and easier to use for instant visual analysis. We believe decision makers, politicians as well as education at almost all levels lack adequate tools.
There is no political agenda behind the work. The idea is that all people, independently of their political agenda, should get free access to already existing statistics about global development to easily improve their understanding about the complex society.
