In short, what is Gapminder?

Gapminder’s mission is to fight the most devastating ignorance with a free fact-based worldview everyone can understand. We provide free online tools, data and videos to better understand the changing world. All is free to use and most of it can be distributed under cc-license. Gapminder is an independent foundation based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was founded in 2005 by Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund and Hans Rosling.

Why is Gapminder asking for donations?

Gapminder is looking for sustainable ways to freely make data about the world understandable and debunk devastating myths. Gapminder needs to stay economically independent in order to be trustworthy and credible. We want to achieve this by relying on donations from many different sources.

Where does my money go?

Your money will help us innovate methods for promoting a fact based world view and make the material freely available. We do not give any grants or donations. Your donation will be used only to support our work. Users should know that our presentations of the changing world is based on the best available data and research consensus. We do not communicate on behalf of somebody else.

Is Gapminder charity?

The Gapminder foundation is not considered a charity by Swedish law. Gapminder is a non-profit organisation based in Sweden.

Why should I donate to Gapminder foundation?

Gapminder wants to promote a fact based world view to all people in the world, free of charge and without advertising. We are non-profit and your contribution will help us achieve that aim.

What is your donor privacy policy?

Gapminder is, for book keeping purposes, bound by the Swedish law to save the following information about each donation: name, address, and amount donated. We will not use the information in any other purpose. We are also bound by Swedish law to save the information for 10 years in order for the tax authorities to control our financial transactions back in time.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Gapminder Foundation is registered in Sweden and gifts to Gapminder are not tax deductible in Sweden.

Moreover, Gapminder Foundation does not have charity status. (As we are not based in the US, we do not have the granted official tax exempt status (section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code) from the United States Internal Revenue Service.)

Does Gapminder need to pay tax on my donation?

No, received donations are not subject to taxation in Sweden.

Paypal does not accept my donation, what can I do?

In some countries, you cannot use Paypal for personal transactions, please see: User Agreement for PayPal Service
You can also have a problem with your bank. Unfortunately Gapminder is unable to help you with any issues in relation to the Pay Pal payment solution. We are, however, very interested to know what kind of problems you experience so please send an email to [email protected]

Can I send checks?

No, not at present. Please let us know if this is an option you would like Gapminder to add in the future.

How can Gapminder be non-profit when some of the lectures, services and assignments are charged for?

All the surplus Gapminder makes on its lectures, services and assignments goes to Gapminder’s operations.

Can I donate to Gapminder if I am underage?

No! You will have to ask your parents permission.
