Gapminder Foundation means the Swedish non-profit foundation registered as Stiftelsen Gapminder with organization number 802424-7721, referred in this document as “Gapminder” (and “us”, “we”, or “our”).

Gapminder Website means and its subdomains and any other websites operated by Gapminder, which states that this Privacy Policy applies to that website.

Application means any digital application operated by Gapminder which states that this Privacy Policy applies to that application.


Gapminder Website and Gapminder Application, including all information and materials contained on them, are managed by Gapminder. For any questions regarding this Privacy Policy please contact us at [email protected].

Gapminder is committed to ensuring the privacy of all our users. This Privacy Policy governs all pages on the Gapminder Website and the operation of the Gapminder Applications. It does not apply to pages or applications hosted or operated by other organisations, including the websites or applications of third party sites. The Gapminder Websites and Applications may be linked to the websites and/or applications of such other parties, but those other sites may have their own privacy policies which apply to them and their services. We advise you to read all privacy policies of all third party sites you visit carefully.


By using any Gapminder Website and/or Gapminder Application, you consent to the terms of this Privacy Policy. Gapminder may change the terms of this Privacy Policy from time to time. Your use of the Gapminder Website and/or Gapminder Application will be on the terms of this Privacy Policy as amended from time to time.

What types of information do we collect and store?

The type and amount of information we receive and store depends on how you use the Gapminder Websites and/or Applications. You can access most of the pages on the Gapminder Websites without telling us who you are and without revealing any personal information.

We do not collect personal information (such as your name, address, phone, email address and IP address) on the Gapminder Websites or Gapminder Applications unless you choose to provide it by actively writing or sharing them with us by any other means. For example, if you decide to donate to Gapminder, register to receive the Gapminder Certificate, subscribe to our newsletter, or fill out a form in our website, we will receive your first and last name and any other info you decide to send us, such as a photo, and your IP address and other location data.  If you apply for a job or volunteer role at Gapminder we will collect information that you send so that we can process your application and assess your suitability for the role. If you send us your home documentation to be used on Dollar Street, we might collect more information to better illustrate how families in that income level live. If you create an account on Gapminder Worldview Upgrader, we collect your email address, and also your age, nationality and name if you wish to share it to personalise a diploma or keep track of your test progress and notify you of updated content. How do we use the information collected?

Your personal information will be retained by Gapminder and its service providers in a secure environment, will be kept confidential, and will only be used in connection with the purposes for which it is submitted, or as otherwise explained on Gapminder Website or Gapminder Application, or as necessary for us to comply with our legal obligations. For example, personal information submitted for the purposes of making a donation will be used to process that donation and personal information submitted with an expression of receiving a certificate will be used to create the given certificate. We may also use the grouped data collected by google analytics or similar service in connection to our website to better understand how users use Gapminder Website and Applications.


We take appropriate security measures to ensure that we keep your information secure, accurate and up to date, and that we only keep it for as long as is reasonable and necessary. However the transmission of information over the Internet is never completely secure, so while we do our best to protect personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of information transmitted to the Gapminder Websites and/or Gapminder Applications.

Sharing of your personal information

The information you provide will not be sold or rented nor will it be shared with third parties unless we have your permission, or are required to disclose the information by law or in the following circumstances:

Hosting and processing: Gapminder Websites and Gapminder Applications are hosted by third party service providers and therefore any personal details you submit may be processed by that third party data processors.

Improvement of Gapminder’s Websites and Applications: we work with third party service providers to improve the Gapminder Website and Gapminder Applications. These services providers might be given access to your personal data on Gapminder’s behalf and they shall use it in connection to that service only. For example, we might provide your personal data to the third party IT consultancy firm who is improving the platform we use for issuing the Gapminder Certificates.

All of these third party services providers will process your personal information only on Gapminder’s behalf and will be bound by strict confidentiality conditions and have signed a third party data processing agreement with us in compliance with GDPR. The disclosure of your personal information discussed above may involve transfer of that information outside of the UK and European Union. Countries outside of the European Union, may not have data privacy laws as strong as those in force in the European Union.

Access to your personal information

You have the right of access to personal information that we hold about you, to correct that information or, in some circumstances, to object to our processing of your information, under data privacy law. An eventual deletion of personal information will be handled in accordance to GDPR and will on request be provided with a full record of our processing of your information.
