Rosling on “100 top global thinker”-list

fpHans Rosling, founder and director of Gapminder, is one of the world’s “100 most important global thinkers” of 2009, according to Foreign Policy Magazine.

Hans Rosling comments the list on his Twitter-feed: “One of 100 top global thinker, Honored, but instead of #96 I had rather been placed after Valerie Hudson (#97).

Rosling is honored at #96 on the list for “boggling our minds with paradigm-shattering data“. The list is topped by (1) Ben Bernanke, the chairman of US federal reserve for his actions to turn the US-depression and (2) Barack Obama for “for reimagining America’s role in the world.”

Here is what Foreign Policy writes about Hans Rosling:

Rosling, a doctor and global-health professor, has become famous for his energetic lectures, in which he narrates mind-blowing statistics on development and public health — as they literally move across a screen. Imagine x-y axes filled with data points, each representing a country. As time passes, the dots move, realigning to show changes in child mortality, percentage of paved roads, unemployment rates, or pretty much any other metric you can imagine. Rosling’s quest to use numbers to shatter stereotypes of rich and poor countries has brought him global prominence.

  2. great news !
I’ve been watching all the ted movies by Hans Rosling,
and I’m very interested in checking the Google motion chart app,
and how I can learn new things out of my company’s data,
when looked at with a different tool.

    thanks !

  3. Congratulations to Hans and to the entire Gapminder team. Way to go guys!
    Best regards from Paris,
    Simón.

  4. Damm you Hans! I feel like that Russian figure skater. I was supposed to have your spot (#96). I developed a BASIC program to display multivarate data visualy a while back. It was a virtual stage that the user could rotate, tip, etc on his screen. On that stage (at numerous locations [X,Y,Z]) appeared various sized bubbles. Each bubble could have a color. Each also had a face (not my idea. See “Chernov Faces”) which displayed 3 or 4 more indicators. So, including movement with time, my Clown Faces on a Stage could represent 7 or 8 indicators simultaneously. Unfortunately, the program still has bugs. If anyone wants to translate it into Object Oriented Code, please let me know. Anyway, Hans . . . congratulations!

  5. I very much agree. I whole-heartedly implemented gapminder “off-shoots” to display some very complex data on our website. Dr. Rosling’s talk a few days ago at NIH was amazing and I wish him all the best!

    Ajoy

  6. Dr. Rosling has inspired me with his energy as well as the ease with which he breaks down complex topics. Congratulations; I hope to continue to learn from your lectures!
