Monthly income

R lives in Kalobeyei Village 1, Kenya, with her four children. She is 38 years old.  R spends her time grinding maize, cooking and washing clothes. She would like to farm but does not currently have space, although she does have ducks. She does not work and relies on monthly cash transfers from the World Food Programme (WFP), via a programme called Bamba Chakula. She does not receive income from other sources.

Rising food prices caused R to go into debt. Because of this, the shopkeeper keeps the card on which she receives the monthly cash transfers from WFP. As R cannot access money directly, she sometimes resells food received from the shopkeeper to buy something else, for example, pens and uniforms for her children. R has two meals a day and mainly eats beans, yellow peas and omena. She is severely food insecure. One main challenge is getting enough water. She often has to travel to other villages to collect water and in the past her jerry cans have been stolen. A further challenge is that her toilet was blown away, so she is currently using her neighbours’. R did not go to school - in the future, she hopes to have more money so she can pay for her son to attend secondary school. This family lives in a refugee camp, with very little money, but with access to aid in the form of food from the World Food Programme and several assets on their house, such as the solar panels and the cooking pots, are provided by the UNHCR.
