The family lives in the Philippines. J is 48 years old and she works as a cigarette vendor. She lives with her daughter and 5 grandchildren in a 1-bedroom house and has been living there for 16 years. The family’s most favorite item is their TV. The next thing they plan on buying is rice. Their dream is to be able to buy a big house.

The family lives in the Philippines. J is 48 years old and she works as a cigarette vendor. She lives with her daughter N, 23 years old, who is unemployed, her 4 grandsons K, 14 years old, R, 6 years old, E, 4 years old, and S, 3 years old, and a granddaughter P, 5 months old. All their grandchildren are students except for the youngest grandson S and granddaughter P. The family lives in a one-bedroom house, which they built with the help of family and friends, and is free of rent. They've been living there for the past 16 years. The house has electricity, which sometimes fails, but no toilet. They also own another dwelling. The family has to buy all their food supplies from the market. They use wood for cooking in the kitchen. J and her daughter spend 21 hours a week collecting water from a source nearby. She also spends 10 hours a week doing housework with her grandson. The family hardly saves any money. They’ve never been on vacation and the furthest they have ever been was Tacloban, in the Philippines. The family’s most favorite item in the house is the TV. The next thing they plan on buying is rice. They hope that one day they will be able to fulfill their dream of buying a big house.
