Drinking water must be collected from a location about 15 minutes away, and E along with one of her children spend 7 hours per week doing it. The family produces all their food needs, but at times they also purchase food supplies which cost them 80% of their income. They use wood for cooking in the kitchen, and collecting wood takes 10 hours every week. The family has never been outside of Malawi, and their last vacation was many years ago. They are not saving money. Their next big plan is to spend money on building a brick house with cement and iron sheets. They dream of being able to buy bed sheets.
