The family lives in Bangladesh. J is 34 years old and is a farmer. His wife, S, is 28 years old and lives with their 2 children and a grandmother. Their daughter, N, is 9 years old and the son, Z, is 7 years old. Both are students at the local school. J works 70 hours/week. The family lives in a three-bedroom house, and have been living here for 16 years. It is made of straw walls and a tin roof, and was built with help from their friends and family. It has no electricity and the toilet facility is within the premises of the house. The family also owns agricultural land over which the father does some agricultural activities for 8 hours every week. The family purchases 70% of their food supplies from the market, while the rest comes from their own produce. Food supplies cost 50% of their income. The drinking water source is on the premises of their house and is free of cost. In the kitchen, firewood and charcoal are used to light the stove. The adult females of the family spend 8 hours every week collecting firewood. The family saves very little money. The next thing they plan on buying is a milk cow. Their most favorite item is their motorbike. They dream that one day they might afford to own a nice permanent house.
