The  family lives in Cambodia. P is 47 years old and works as a scavenger, collecting recycling goods. He lives with his son K, 12 years old, and his daughter R, 12 years old, who are students. Together with his son and daughter, he works for 70 hours/week and also receives a pension from the government for military injuries.

The  family lives in a single room that they have occupied. They've been living here for the past 3 months. The house has reliable electricity and a toilet that is not shared with other households. Water must be collected elsewhere and takes 30 minutes to collect.

The family buys 50% of their food, which costs them about half of their income. They get the other 50% of food supplies from other sources. P spends 2½ hours per week collecting water and 20 hours a week collecting wood, which is used as fuel for cooking. He also spends 7 hours doing housework with his son and daughter.

The  family saves very little money. They’ve never been on a vacation. The next thing they plan to spend money on is rice. They hope that one day they will be able to fulfil their dream of buying a motorcycle taxi.

Wealthier families have more materials to choose from, like colourful and heatproof plastics and stainless steel.
