R, a 23-year-old fresh graduate, lives with his mother and grandmother in India. His father passed away a year ago and he is now preparing to start his first job in marketing. R and his mother live in a 3-bedroom house which they own. They have been living there for the past 8 years. The house has electricity which fails once every week, running water that is not safe to drink (so they use a water filter), and indoor toilet facilities. Their immediate family lives in the same house, in the two apartments above. Other family members live in the house across the street. Although they do not really like the exterior of the house, they love that the house is spacious for the whole family to get together. The family buys all their food supplies, which cost them about 40% of their income. They also spend about 20% of their money on water. They use natural gas for cooking in their kitchen. They save money and sometimes go on vacation. Their last vacation was a quarter ago and lasted for more than a month. The furthest place they have ever been was Virginia, USA. Their favorite item at home is a Hawankund, a religious pot used for performing pooja (worship of Gods). The next big thing they are planning to buy is a new TV. Rishabu’s dream is to someday be able to buy a big car for his mother.
