One response to “Income per person revised and expanded”

  1. What do you think is the main trend that emerges in life expectancy between 1800 and 1900 since the data is at best, “guesses”?

    Thank you for your question
The exact relative ranking of countries when it come to life expectancy are mostly educated guesses when it comes to the 19th century (the same goes for GDP per capita). However, for several countries we have more detailed data, and we are quite certain about the general trends. These trends include:
    - Life in 1800 in all countries of the world were short and poor. There were variations, but all within the band that corresponds to the low income countries of today.
    - During the 19th century a group of countries started to improve both their health and their incomes
    - These countries included western Europe and its “offsprings” (North America, new Zealand, Australia), but some other countries had also started to improve, such as Japan and Argentina
    - Although less certain: it is unlikely that any region experienced any sustained deterioration in Life expectancy or incomes, although there were some probable exceptions (e.g. China).
