About Dollar StreetAll people of the world live on Dollar Street, the poorest to the left and the richest to the right. Everybody else live inbetween. Dollar Street contains photo-panoramas from households at different income levels. Current version includes 13 household and 3 school documentations from Mozambique, South Africa and Uganda. You scroll the street to left and right to move up and down the street. Then click on the houses to get inside and explore different household functions. The current version unfortunately only exist in a PC-version. |

Is this presentation available in other formats than Microsofts .exe? Unfortunately I cannot run this on a Linux or Mac OS. Since it is build with Flash I thought there would be a .swf around – but I could not find it
I have downloaded the dollar street flash presentation and it repeatedly comes up with a warning that “this application requires Shockwave Player 8.5, which is not installed. Click OK to download it”. I have clicked “OK” and downloaded the latest version of Shockwave – not 8.5, but version 11.
Despite downloading Shockwave and attempting to run the programme it simply does not work.
I have tried to search the web for forums to solve this problem but there is nothing out there.
Best wishes,
Prof. John Cooper
dear developers
ok so this is a really great idea … 10 points for that
but minus several million points for making it PC only
what about us Mac users— we want to watch the dollar street stuff too
does this mean i will not be able to use the other options available on the upload … disappointing … in the extreme … grr grr and double grrrr
stuffit for Mac zip for PC …
yours
I must say I am very disappointed that there is no option for us Mac users. I’m really interested, but unfortunately able to use because I’m a Mac…
I have the same problem another user cited – I have Shockwave installed yet it won’t run telling me that I need Shockwave 8.5 installed.
Sincerely
Oliver Halter
Dollar Street was one of the first products Gapminder made in 2001. Although it was not completely finalized we have chosen to make the beta version available for download in the state it is, even though it is not bug-free and even though it doesn’t work on a Mac.
We will not improve this existing version, and if future versions of Shockwave makes it impossible to run Dollar street, the only option we have is to remove it completely. Since it still works on many PC we will leave it on-line for now.
We do recognize that the concept is very useful and appreciated and that Dollar Street even in the existing version can is used is for us a sign that the concept can be developed more in the future.
Please create FORMAT SWF or anything thats UNIVERSAL not just PC.
I understand that PC has larger share of the market however please be kind to ALL COMPUTER USERS not just for windows.
Peace & Happiness
Thank you
ps if anyone finds this data executable in Mac please send me a email = tenshady@gmail.com
The above MAC problem could be solved by using a free download called ‘Flip to MAC’ – works on my MacBook and on my iMac… Give it a try – Hope that helps

Dear Jonathan, sorry but Dollar Street does not exist in Mac-format, I am afraid. It’s a beautiful idea and tool but its not quite complete, technically. It’s not impossible that Dollar Street is something we will re-develop in the future, and then of course also for mac, but as of today, nothing is in the pipeline.
We hear what you’re saying, we agree and see what we can do.

Ps. At Gapminder, PC does not have a larger share…
This content is very useful and its data is very useful for the user and keep posting the updates regularly.

I found it ironic after spending some time going through the pictures on the “left side of the street” that I came back to the comments and they were predominantly from folks complaining about lack of a Mac version (apparently from folks on the right side of the street?). For those who can find nothing better to do than complain – please borrow a PC from a friend and have a look. After you see the pictures in the presentation, you might think twice before complaining about the format – or complaining about anything for that matter….
Dear John & Oliver,
I encountered the same problem when helping a friend (it told us we needed to download Shockwave though we had already done that). We managed to solve it this way:
1. restarted the computer (don’t know if this was necessary)
2. Right-clicked on the link – selected “Save target as”
3. Saved the zip file on the desktop of the computer
4. Extracted the files to a new folder (right click the zipped folder, select “Extract all files”)
- and then it worked! (open the folder, click “Start” then select “Run”)
I don’t know if this will help you but I hope so, it’s a great program.
